I think that News 12 has some competition.

Have you ever thought to ask your child to make predictions about the weather or to recall what has occurred outside during the day? A simple conversation about the weather can help your child develop both pre and post reading skills as well as influence a love of science and nature. Take a few minutes and discuss the weather with your preschooler--ask questions that will make them think. For fun, make a chart of the remaining March days...how will it end? Like a Lion or a Lamb?

Ms. Joanie

Help Your Child Get Ready to Read!!!!!!!!

How?
Tell Stories

Why?
Narrative skills are when children are able to describe things, tell about events in sequential order and retell stories.

What can you do?
Participate in "Shared Reading" with your child by reading predictable books. Discuss the cover and illustrations in the book. Ask questions intermittently to check your child's understanding of the story (5 Ws). Discuss the beginning/middle/ending of the story. Re-read the book to ensure comprehension. After reading the book for the second time ask your child to tell you the story. Be sure that you are listening!

Suggested Books for Narrative Skill Sets:

Good Night, Gorilla (2s and 3s) by Peggy Rathmann
Very Hungery Caterpillar (3s and 4s) by Eric Carle
Bear Snores On (3s and 4s) by Karma Wilson
The Giving Tree (4s) by Shel Silverstein

Scheduled School Closings
Bethpage Nursery School is STILL closed on 2Friday, March 19, 2010 and Monday, April 5, 2010. We have only used 2 snow days on a MWF rotation and 1 on a T/TH rotation. Our school calendar clearly states that we will make up closings in excess of 3 closures on a MWF rotation and in excess of 2 closures on a T/TH rotation. Unlike Bethpage Schools we have built these days into our calendar. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call or email me.

Favorite Fella
Our Nursery and Pre K classes have received invitations to Bethpage Nursery School's annual Favorite Fella breakfast. Each child is allowed to bring one fella (18 or older) as a guest for breakfast, a craft and possibly some playground time. Please RSVP to Jeanie Shelton-Clyne(4AM) ASAP. Each fella must bring 2 folding chairs.

March 20 Nursery Favorite Fella 10:00-11:30AM
March 21 Pre K Favorite Fella 10:00-11:30AM

Dinner Auction
Thank you to all who supported our school at the annual dinner auction. Many thanks to Danielle Tesler, Lisa Chappell, Jeanie Shelton-Clyne, Nancy Burgos, Angelica Downes, Laurie Khan, Marisa Peters, Pembe Sefket and all that donated items to our auction. The evening was a huge success.

Farewell
Our beloved Ms. Tobi has resigned after 7 years at Bethpage Nursery School. She has taken a new position as a monitor at Bethpage High School. We will miss her!

Summer Fun
Please contact Ms. Sara if you are interested in our Summer program. We have openings in both classes.

Registration for 2010-2011
Please see me to register for the '10-'11 school year. We have openings in our Pre K AM, our new MW AM Nursery class and our Toddler Separation class.

Kindergarten in Bethpage Public Schools
At this point in time most Pre K children are registered for Kindergarten at their home schools. On Tuesday, March 9, 2010, I met with Mr. DeMatassa from Bethpage Union Free School District to discuss the K curriculum. I will be hosting a parent meeting in May to go over and distribute the information I have received. I will also be meeting with my staff to review the curriculum at our April meeting.

Outdoor Play Friendly Reminder
The children will go outside to play if the temperature is 40 degrees or higher. Please dress your child accordingly. As the warm weather approaches please refrain from putting your child in sandals, crocs or flip flops.

Get On Board
We need parents to join our board. Jean Bury will be sending out an invitation to our "Get on Board" General Membership meeting. The meeting will be held in April. Details will follow.

Tuition
Please remember to turn in your tuition at the beginning of every month to avoid $15 late fees.

Welcome
Isabella Romero joined our 3AM class in February. I hope that the new year has gotten off to a great start for everyone. How many of you have made resolutions? Every year I set out to make a resolution and by January 31 it falls flat. This year I decided to make small changes in my life. By small changes I mean things I can actually do with success. For example, since going back to work I lost some valuable "mommy" time with my boys. One of the resolutions I made this year was to make sure that I have at least 30 minutes each evening to snuggle up to read and talk with my 5yr, 2yr and 7 month old children. I have slowed down to enjoy these fleeting moments with my kids. My boys are happier as a result and I get more cooperation out of them. This one small part of my resolution has improved the quality of my family life! If you are interested in making some small changes to experience more parenting joy, please let me know. I have a library of books and articles in my office that can offer insight and help.

Ms. Joanie

Getting Your Preschooler to Read

Play with Sounds:

Phonological awareness is the ability to hear and play with different sounds that make up a word.

How can you help your child play with sounds?

sing songs

recite nursery rhymes and poems

make up silly rhymes

read stories and emphasize the sounds of words

find pictures that begin with certain sounds

clap, snap, tap out the syllables

label household items with letter or word cards

sing "Going on a Letter Hunt" (tune of "Going on a Bear Hunt")--make it up as you go ie: "I'm going on a letter hunt, I'm going on a letter hunt and I'm gonna find, and I'm gonna find things that start with "A"...I found an "alligator"...

The following books are fun to read and help to develop phonological awareness:

Itsy Bitsy Spider by Iza Trapani

Over in the Garden by Jennifer Ward

Llama Llama Red Pajama by Anna Dewdney

Guided Reading Levels

Several parents have asked me about guided reading levels and their correlations. Only the first letter in your child's name should be an uppercase letter. It is very difficult to break the "uppercase" habit. Helpful hint: instead of making dotted letters for tracing try using a highlighter. Tracing a highlighter written letter provides a more fluid motion.

Hurt Feelings

No one likes to have hurt feelings, but we know it happens all the time even when we don't realize it. Recently I was approached by a few families about "birthday invitations." Apparently invitations have gone out via classroom mail and some children have been left out. It is school policy that invitations can only be distributed at Bethpage Nursery School if ALL students are invited. This includes same gender parties. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Parent Teacher Conferences

Conferences have been ongoing this month. I have read through all of the progress reports and signed off on them. If you have any additional concerns about your child please contact me directly.

Registration

Registration for the 2010-2011 school year is in progress. If you have not registered your child as of yet contact Darlene Flaherty (Pre K AM or Two of Us AM) or myself for paperwork. In order to save a spot you must pay the $95 registration fee. The board will be finalizing the details of the program at the end of the month. Flyers will be sent home during the first week of February.

Kindergarten Registration

Bethpage Public Schools will be sending out information regarding K registration for the fall of 2010. I will post the information in the main lobby. It is your responsibility to fill out and provide the district with the proper paperwork. The district will contact you to set up a Kindergarten screening at "their" convenience.

Dinner Auction

Our annual dinner auction will be held on March 4, 2010 at HR Singletons. Each family is entitled to 1 ticket as per the fundraising fee. Additional tickets may be purchased for $42.00 per person. All proceeds go to Bethpage Nursery School. If you would like to make basket donations or know anyone that would like to contribute to the auction please contact Danielle Tesler (Toddler Separation). The dinner auction is a guaranteed fun night out!

50/50 Birthday Box Raffle

In the main hallway we have the 50/50 raffle. $5 per birth date box. The winner will be chosen at the dinner auction. If all the boxes sell out the winner can take home up to $912.50. If you would like to buy out your boxes before the auction please see me or one of the teachers for details.

Tuition Reminders

Please remember to put your tuition in the mailbox by the 1st week of each month. There is a $15.00 late fee for tuition turned in after the 10th of the month. Please come to me if there are any extenuating circumstances that might prevent a timely payment.

Parking

Please refrain from parking on the school driveway. Staff members are required to park on the driveway or on Nibbe adjacent to the school lawn. I have staff members that arrive by 9:15AM and are often forced to park on Lexington Avenue. In addition, please do not block the driveway with your vehicle. Our neighbor directly across the street has made several complaints that she cannot exit her driveway.

Arrival

Every year at this time we change our arrival procedures for the Pre K classes in order to prepare them for Kindergarten. The children are all well adjusted to the routine and separate well. Starting on February 1, 2010 the Pre K classes will line up outside and enter the building without parents. Our goal is to have the children develop some necessary independence skills. They will be responsible for handing in their mail folders, checking in for attendance, finding their cubby hooks, hanging up their coats and for finding a carpet space on their own. Please support the teachers by preparing your child for the change.

From the Health and Safety Archives

In order to keep all the children and staff healthy please remember the health and safety guideline:

IF YOU SUSPECT YOUR CHILD IS ILL, PLEASE DO NOT SEND THEM TO SCHOOL.

Mary Had A Little Cold (author unknown)

Mary had a little cold and would not stay at home

And Everywhere that Mary went the cold was sure to roam

It wandered into Molly's eyes and filled them full of tears

It jumped from there to Robby's nose and then to Jimmy's ears

It painted Anna's throat bright red and swelled poor Johnny's head

Dora had a fever and a cough put Jack to bed

The moral of this little tale is very quickly said

She could have saved a lot of pain by just one day in BED!

Snow Days

In the event of a snow storm the Board President and I decide if the school will be closed. Generally we follow the Bethpage School District for closures, however in the past we have disagreed with their decision and have closed on our own. You will receive a call from your class parent or child's teacher in the event of a self directed closure. Tune into channel 12 news--if Bethpage Schools are closed we WILL be closed too.

Snow Removal

If we have a snowstorm and anyone is available to volunteer for snow removal please contact Jenny Looney, Tracie Schappert or me. We would be most appreciative of the help. The average snow removal can cost the school $200 per clean up. If we can avoid contracting out it would be quite beneficial.

Dates to Remember

2/6/10 Family Fun Day

2/15/10-2/19/10 Winter Recess

December Edition

Happy Holidays to All!

Come back in January for the next newsletter.

Ms. Joanie

November Edition

Happy Thanksgiving to All!

This month the children have been focusing on all the amazing fall changes as well as the importance of being thankful for family, friends, food and the world around them.

The teachers have been diligently planning lessons that allow the children to explore the above themes through math, science, literacy, art and social studies. I am sure that your little ones have been surprising you with their knowledge of deciduous vs evergreen trees and why leaves change color. Have they graphed favorite leaf colors with you? made leaf patterns? or told you what happens to trees in the fall? If not, take a moment to indulge them by engaging in one of the aforementioned activities. I promise you will have a lot of fun!

Since Thanksgiving is just about here the children will really be talking about family and togetherness. The teachers will be reading books that explain tradition and the act of giving. Please take some time to discuss your own family traditions with your child. Each child will be given the opportunity to share what is "special" within his/her own family.

On behalf of the Faculty, Board and myself I want to extend a very Happy, Safe, Healthy and FUN Thanksgiving to all of you. We are all most appreciative of all that you do for our school community.

Enjoy,

Ms. Joanie

Pre K

The Pre K class will be celebrating Thanksgiving through the famous story "Stone Soup." I think that we all can learn a lesson from this activity. Ms. Sara is teaching the children the importance of working together as a team to create something so wonderful that ALL can be proud of. I believe that Bethpage Nursery School is just like that pot of "Stone Soup." Without the cooperative efforts of the parents, children, board and faculty we are simply a pot of boiling water. When we work together and all have input, our pot becomes "the best stone soup ever to be made!"

Nursery and Toddler Separation

The Nursery and Toddler classes will celebrate Thanksgiving with special snacks. The teachers will let you know what they need.

Goody Bags

Due to safety and allergy concerns I am banning goody bags. The only goody bags that will be sent home from school are those made by the teachers and/or class moms. Please DO NOT send in any goody bags for future events. The teachers have been given strict instructions to return them to you. Thank you for your cooperation.

Healthful Donations

I sent out a letter 2 weeks ago regarding "Healthful Donations" of paper towels, tissues, wipes, lysol, clorox, disinfecting wipes and other cleaners. This collection will be ongoing throughout the year. This is NOT mandatory. If you are able to help I am most appreciative.

Illness

PLEASE keep your children home if they are not feeling well. I know that it is sometimes difficult to tell if your child is sick or just tired in the morning. If there is even a slight doubt about your child's health please err on the side of caution and take a sick day. We are trying to keep our school as germ free as is possible. If your child has a fever please keep him/her home from school for 24 hours after a fever breaks--he/she must be fever free for 24 hours without the use of tylenol or ibuprofen.

Fundraising

Danielle Tesler has sent out information on the "Winter Wonderland Pancake Breakfast." Last year I had the good fortune of hanging out with the children while their parents went out to prepare for the upcoming holidays. We played games, made crafts and shared a fun snack in a safe environment. STRESS FREE for MOM and DAD!!!! Please note that I am almost always available via email or phone to address any of your school needs.

We are closed:

November 3 Election Day

November 11 Veteran's Day

November 26-27 Happy Thanksgiving

October Edition

Dear Families,

Thank you all for supporting our efforts at the Bethpage Nursery School Fall Festival. Even though the event was held on our rain date it was a great success. I am most appreciative of the efforts made by the fundraising and hospitality committees. Without them the day would not have gone so well.

The children enjoyed making pumpkin crafts and singing with Keith the musician. The highlight of the event for people under 4ft was the extra large inflatable bouncy house and slide donated by the Clyne Family. For those of us not "allowed" to bounce about, the roasted corn prepared by Joe Schappert was the favorite.

If you did not have a chance to come on down this year for corn, mums, cotton candy, baked goods, games, entertainment and a whole lot of family fun, you can always join us next year!

Fondly,

Ms. Joanie

_____________________________________________________________________

This month is chock full of fun fall activities. The Nursery and Pre K classes will be going on pumpkin picking trips at Schmitt's Family Farms. The Toddler Separation class will pick pumpkins at our school in our homemade "Pee Wee Pumpkin Patch." All classes will have Halloween parties. The Class Moms and Teachers will tell you what they need.

Have a little fun with your little ones while singing two of my favorite Halloween songs:

We're Not Afraid
(Sung to: "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star")
Ghosts and goblins, cats and bats,
We're not afraid of this or that.
They are only make-believe,
Funny costumes on Halloween.
Ghosts and goblins, cats and bats,
We're not afraid of this or that.

The Pumpkins are Here - (Sung to: "The Farmer in the Dell").
The pumpkins are here, the pumpkins are there. The pumpkins, the pumpkins are everywhere.
The pumpkins are up; the pumpkins are down. The pumpkins, the pumpkins are all around.
The pumpkins are in; the pumpkins are out. The pumpkins, the pumpkins are all about.
The pumpkins are low; the pumpkins are high. The pumpkins, the pumpkins all say, "Good-bye".

If you want to make a Halloween treat without the mess try these tasty treats:

Creepy Crawly Spiders

Stop and Shop brand Marshmallow Chocolate coated cookies (or Mallomars)

thin pretzel stix

Tube icing

Place stix in the sides of the cookie and give the cookie icing eyes---YUM!

or

Witches Hats

Stop and Shop fudge striped cookies

Hershey's kiss

Tube icing

Turn the cookie chocolate side up, squeeze a drop of icing in the center and place an unwrapped kiss on top of the icing to reveal a witch's hat! Delicious.

(Use these cookie creations on top of cupcakes for a fun decoration.)

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

September Edition

Dear BNS Families,

I would like to welcome all of our new families as well as our alumni families to the Bethpage Cooperative Nursery School. I am certain that your experience at our school will be memorable. The teachers and I strive to provide your children with an education that nurtures the growth and development of the "whole child." Our curriculum is based on the "Creative Curriculum." We utilize developmentally appropriate practices that encourage the development of social, emotional, physical and cognitive abilities.
This year I have asked the teachers to individualize instruction by planning activities that address the multiple intelligences as described by Howard Gardner. The multiple intelligences are: linguistic/verbal, logical/mathematical, musical/rhythmic, spatial/visual, bodily/kinesthetic, interpersonal, intrapersonal and naturalist. Many children are able to learn using all of the intelligences, however there are some children who learn best through one or two. We want to be certain that our students are given the opportunity to "exercise" their intelligences, therefore the teachers will be planning activities that encourage: speaking, listening, observing, discussing, touching, playing, figuring, manipulating, constructing, deconstructing, using the arts, dancing, singing and connecting. I believe that using Gardner's model of the multiple intelligences in the classroom will create a positive and successful learning experience for the teachers and children alike.
If you have any questions regarding our curriculum or teaching practices, please feel free to contact me.

Fondly,
Ms Joanie

Communication

We all know that communication is the "key to success and happiness." So, I am asking you to make every effort to talk to me, the board and faculty. Nothing gets accomplished when we stand on the sideline and just "think" about issues that are of concern. I am MORE than happy to discuss issues as they arise. I will do my best to help you address them. There are several ways for you to communicate with the faculty and board:
1. Each faculty and board member has a mailbox in the main foyer for you to leave notes

2. Each nursery and pre k child has a folder that must be sent in/out of school daily. All correspondence can be put in the folder.

3. Utilize the anonymous comment box that is in the main foyer for those questions you are not sure about asking.

4. Call the school to report absences or to speak with the faculty 931-0811 between 9:00-9:30AM.

5. Email me at joanie@bethpagenurseryschool.org or call my cell at 385-0776.

6. Get to know your class parent and board members.

Playground Safety

Please make sure that your children are coming to school in comfortable play clothes and shoes suitable for running and climbing. Sandals and slip on shoes are prohibited. If your child is wearing inappropriate shoes we will have them sit on the bench during recess. This is a safety precaution.

Participation

This is the best way to be involved in your child's education. The teachers and I want you to enjoy your time in the classroom. Please take the time to review the participation guidelines before coming in to the classroom. Don't worry about forgetting things--the teaching assistants will help you out.

CELL PHONES MUST BE PUT ON SILENT MODE OR OFF during your participation day. As a parent I do understand the need to have your phone on. However, I am asking you to limit calls to emergencies only. Remember that you are in the classroom to be with your "someone special."

Healthy Snacks

Please try to remember that we would like to encourage the children to make wise choices about the food they eat. At the orientation meetings you were given a list of snacks that are "healthier" than other options. Obviously fruits, vegetables and whole grains are better for our bodies. Whenever possible bring in a snack that does not contain high fat, preservatives, high fructose corn syrup and hydrogenated oils. Birthdays and holidays are an exception to the rule. At all times remember that peanut products are strictly prohibited.

Remodeling

A HUGE thank you to Chris Calamia(Pre K AM) and John Looney (Pre K AM and 2 Tod Sep) for their construction projects at BNS. Chris with some help from Kevin Clyne (Pre K AM) and Joe Verdi (Pre K AM and Nursery PM) demolished and rebuilt the school kitchen. John and some of his friends installed plumbing and a bathroom in the lower level classroom. John also fixed the plumbing in the kitchen and set the sink to complete the project. Chris and John's expertise, time and dedication are most appreciated.

Our lower level classroom was also given a face lift over the summer by Eagle Scout James Fischer and his troop. The room was painted, had safety features added, vinyl pole wraps placed on columns and oak cabinets hung for storage.

Fundraising

Danielle Tesler and Lisa Chappell have many exciting events planned this year. Last year's fundraising allowed us to install the bathroom, remodel the kitchen and purchase a flat screen TV for the main room. This year the board would like to raise funds for a new water and sand tables for the toddlers and a new piece of playground equipment. The major goal for fundraising is to start raising money to resurface the playground.

FALL FESTIVAL

Please join us for the Fall Family Fun Festival on October 3 at 11:00 AM. This year has flown right by and has been full of wonder and excitement for everyone. The children have done beautifully in all of our programs. The teachers and I are so proud of the social, emotional and intellectual growth of your little ones.

I want to personally thank all of you for making my first year as Director at Bethpage Nursery School such a positive and rewarding experience. I have truly enjoyed each and every moment with all of you. I especially appreciated all of the kindness and support you extended to me. I am certain that the years to come will be equally as wonderful.

I wish you all the best for a safe, happy and healthy summer. For those who are returning to our school next year, be READY for another fun filled year with many new and exciting adventures to share.

My "KINDERGARTEN" friends... I am so proud of all of your achievements this year. You have grown so much and are ready to learn how to read, write, add, subtract, learn about science and social studies and SO MUCH MORE!!! I am positive that you are ready and totally prepared for your new teacher. Your years at Bethpage Nursery School have gotten you where you need to be. This year Ms. Sara and Ms. Mary worked very hard to get you set for your new school experience.

Parents, change is a fantastic part of life, it makes things more interesting and exciting. At times change can be a challenge, but in the end we understand the benefits. Whether you are returning to our school or heading off to a new one next year you will experience change. It does not matter that you have "already been through a grade with an older child"--you are now going to two of us, toddler separation, nursery, pre k or kindergarten with "this child." This new experience will be unique...as unique as this little one.

I do understand the feelings that many of you are having at this time of year. As many of you already know or can tell, I am expecting my third son on or about July 1, 2009. I will also be sending my oldest son off to kindergarten in the fall. My second son will be entering the exciting phase of the "terrible twos" and which will be paired with taking on the role of "big brother" by 20 months. I am pretty sure that Raymond is not going to move over for his new baby brother. Change is eminent at the Story house!

The biggest change for me will be sending Thomas off to kindergarten five days a week on the bus. As a mommy it saddens me to think that my little boy is growing up so quickly. I recently realized that his going off to kindergarten meant no more lunch dates or impromptu trips during the week. I will also have to share the awesome responsibility of educating my son with another person. From the day we took him home from the hospital Andrew and I have been his "main" teachers. Sure we shared the experiences with grandparents, aunts, uncles and preschool teachers, but now he will have "his" kindergarten teacher. He/She will get to know him quite well over the next school year and will spend more time with him during the week than my husband and I will.

During Thomas' nursery and prek school years I felt like I was still in "control." The teachers always kept the moms and dads in the loop. We shared in parties, activities and were welcomed in the classroom with open arms. I know that next year will be different in many ways. I will have to step back and put my trust in his teacher(s). I cannot share my reservations or worries with my son. It is my job as the mommy to build him up and inflate the kindergarten experience.

As a former kindergarten teacher of several years I know that my mommy worries are silly and have no real foundation. I know that the world that lies ahead for Thomas in kindergarten is absolutely fantastic and wonderful. It is my experience that draws me back when I begin panic. Kindergarten teachers have the BEST job in the world. Teachers of 5-6 year olds love their profession and you will find seem to have been molded for the very job. I want you as parents to know that your kids will be fine--just as Thomas will be. Take it from me that they will be learning and loving their new class. I am relaxed because I know what will be happening in the classroom---lots of LEARNING and tons of FUN. I am also certain that the teachers and assistants will care deeply for our kindergarteners.

My knowledge brings me great comfort and allows me to look forward to all the new and amazing things that are bound to happen in 2009-2010. I am thrilled about new friends, reading, writing, experiments and making new connections! So parents and children join me by embracing change with open arms.

Best Wishes and Warmest Regards,

Ms. Joanie

Safety Reminders:

With the warm weather upon us, please remember to put sunscreen on your children before school. Dress the children in weather appropriate clothing and footwear as we will be on the playground daily. DO NOT send your child to school in flip flops, open toed shoes or open backed shoes as the can be dangerous.

K Readiness

The Pilot program for K Readiness was a huge success this year. The children enrolled do quite well and enjoyed the class thoroughly. Our last session for this year is May 26, 2009. The children will end with a book reading of their home made alphabet books and will present them to family members. Next year the class will run from September to June.

Graduation

Our Pre K class will be graduating on June 17, 2009 at 9:30 AM. Tickets are limited to 4 per family (that is 1 more ticket than in years past). We respectfully ask that younger siblings not attend the ceremony. We would like all of your attention to be on your special graduate.

Picnic

The annual picnic will be held at Haypath Park on June 17, 2009 at 12:30 PM. Details will follow.

Registration

If you have not returned your signed membership agreement with a check for the June tuition as of yet I urge you to do so. We will be opening up unpaid slots to families on the waiting list.
If you have not registered yet and would like to, please see me as soon as possible. Classes are filling up.
I have a waiting list for AM sessions of Nursery, Pre K and Toddler Separation. I have openings in PM sessions for Nursery and Prek as well as the M/W PM Toddler Separation.

Summer Fun

We have only 4 slots available in the summer program for upstairs. There is no parent participation in the summer. Children stay for 3 hours and bring their own lunch. Please see Ms. Sara if you are interested in the program.

Calling for Help

We have projects planned for the summer and need your help! Chris Calamia will be the "foreman" on our kitchen remodel project. He is going to need a demo team and some people to help with the labor of installing cabinetry. If you are ready, willing and able please let me know as soon as possible.

Eagle Scouts

James Fischer and his team will be sprucing up the lower level classroom this summer---new paint, cabinets, shelving, safety measures and much more!

Maintenance

Jenny Looney (nursery) will need some help with little projects over the summer. I would appreciate it very much if some of you could volunteer some time over the summer months to give her hand. If you can help let me know and I will forward your info to her.

John Looney will be replacing the boiler this summer and will also be installing a bathroom in the lower level classroom---WE ARE SO EXCITED ABOUT THE BATHROOM!

Verizon

We have updated our Verizon account to include a fax line and television capability. Our new fax number is 931-0580.
In order to comply with state emergency regulations we are required to have TV access. At this time we do not have money in the budget to purchase a new TV. If anyone has an extra television that they are willing to donate please contact the board. We will be mounting the TV to the wall for safety precautions.

In School Field Trip

The Long Island Children's Museum will be coming in to present "Bubbles" to the nursery class on June 4, 2009 at 10:00AM. THANK YOU! THANK YOU! to Kevin Groom for installing our new "purple giraffe" carpet in the main classroom. He did a fabulous job and more importantly donated the product and all of his labor. We are so fortunate to have someone that cares so much for this school and the safety of our children.

Many thanks to the board members who prepared the room for the job and those that returned the classroom to working order.

Kitchen

The kitchen in the main classroom will be redone before the '09-'10 school year. Chris Calamia (3 AM)has agreed to be the "project manager" for us. He has completed a detailed plan for us and will be using the IKEA cabinetry that was purchased recently with money raised by our Eagle Scout. Chris will need some parents to help him with demolition and construction. If you are interested in helping out let him know.

Lower Room

It seems that our Eagle Scout for the downstairs project has not panned out. We still need to fix up the classroom. We would like a fresh coat of paint and a teachers' center built in the corner. We will need volunteers. This project will be done after the summer program lets out.

John Looney is installing a bathroom in the lower Room over the summer. The board will be going through the school with the faculty to take care of safety concerns. We will be getting rid of toys and other items that present potential risk. The teachers have already removed push pins from walls and bulletin boards. They have also gone through the art unit and have removed the small items that can be a choking hazard. If you see anything in the room that is a concern to you, please do not hesitate to let one of us know.

Registration

Our registration for the '09-'10 school year is ongoing. If you have any pictures from your participation days or special occasions at the school, could you please put a copy in my mailbox. CD files or emailed attachments would be perfect. I will forward the pictures to the class moms.

Graduation and End of the Year Picnic

The date is not settled for graduation and the picnic. According to Danielle Tesler, the event raised $4600.00. Thank you all for your generosity and support. The money raised will be put to good use.

Get on Board with the Board

On Wednesday, March 11, 2009 the board held an open meeting to familiarize members with the board. At the meeting Tiffany Penge discussed open board positions for the '09-'10 school year. She has filled most of the positions, but is still looking for people to fill VP of Membership and membership Co-chair.If you are interested please contact Tiffany Penge (Pre K) or Tracie Schappert (Nursery and Toddler Separation).

Grant Writing

I am looking for people with an interest in research and writing to benefit our school. In the past we have received literacy grants through Target. I am sure that there are many other wonderful grants out there waiting for BNS to tap into them. It is my hope to get grants to improve our science and math programs as well as many other areas. If you are interested and have the time and energy let's talk!

Speech Evaluations

I sent out a letter last week regarding speech evaluations for nursery and pre-k students. This is an optional evaluation. Bethpage Nursery School has been offering this service for the last 15 years. I do believe that it is a valuable experience. Even if a child does not need speech services he or she might have poor articulation, a slight lisp or low muscle tone (all of which do not always allow for services). The evaluator will be able to provide parents with exercises and activities to help the child develop skills. If you have any questions, please call me at the office. I am more than happy to discuss the process.
**Please note that you may go through your individual school district for services and evaluations.**

Picture Day for the "Two of Us" Classes

Studio 39 will be photographing the Wednesday and Friday "Two of Us" classes on Friday, March 27, 2009 at 10:15AM.

REMINDER School Closing

There will be no Pre K classes on Friday, March 27, 2009. The teachers will be attending a meeting. Only "Two of Us" classes will report to the building.

Computer

The Leogrande family has generously donated a computer and printer to the nursery school. I have set it up in the main room. I have loaded literacy and math software that is appropriate for the 3 and 4 year olds. I am very excited about providing the children with technology experiences at BNS!
Safety

In light of the recent tragedy at Carousel Day School in Hicksville the Co-Op Directors have decided to review safety conditions in our schools. I will be meeting with the teachers to assess our current safety status in the classrooms. In addition we are banning carrot sticks, baby carrots, celery and grapes from snack time. We realize that they are healthy snacks, but do not want to assume the risk associated with them. Thank you in advance for your cooperation and appreciate your understanding.

Eagle Scouts

As many of you already know, we have been working with 2 Eagle Scouts this year. One of the scouts has completed his project in the upstairs classroom. He worked diligently with his crew over one weekend (March 7-8) sanding and painting our shelving/cubbie units and painting the entry way walls and double doors. He also made a generous $200.00 donation to put toward replacing the upstairs carpet.
Our second scout is still working on his project proposal. I will keep you posted on the details. I can tell you that he will be working on the downstairs classroom.

New Carpeting

We are very excited to share that Ms. Christine's husband will be installing a new carpet for us before the new school year.

Painting

The Clyne family has donated white paint for the upstairs classroom and kitchen. We hope to be able to paint the room before the '09-'10 school year. We also have left over paint from out scout to complete the last 2 cubbie units. If anyone is interested in volunteering their service to complete these projects, please let me know.

Fall Registration

Just a reminder that registration for the '09-'10 school year is ongoing. Please feel free to call or email me with any questions or concerns. Spread the word about our phenomenal programs at Bethpage Nursery School. We are offering the following sessions:

M/W/F AM and PM Pre K Classes

T/Th AM and PM Nursery Classes

M AM Nursery Enrichment

T PM Kindergarten Readiness

T/TH AM Toddler Separation

M/W PM Toddler Separation

W or F AM Two of Us

The following classes are full: AM Pre K, AM Nursery and AM Toddler Separation

'09-'10 School Year Fees

Christine O'Boyle and I have sent out letters regarding upcoming fees for the new school year. If you are missing any paperwork please contact us ASAP. Please adhere to the dates for payment so that your child does not lose his/her class slot. Thank you for your time and anticipated cooperation.

Summer Registration

If you are interested in "Summer Fun" at BNS please contact Ms Sara. The upstairs program is for Nursery and Pre K children (those that have either completed N or Pre K during '08-'09 school year). The downstairs program is for incoming Nursery and incoming 2 year old children.

Update: The downstairs Summer Fun program is full. January is an exciting time for all of us. It brings so many new opportunities. For many it is a time of change and new beginnings. I hope that all of you have had a positive start to the new year.

I can promise you that 2009 will be a fantastic year at Bethpage Nursery School. The board and I have been working closely to make many great things happen.

Again, thank you to all of you for your generous gifts, thoughtful cards and kindness during the holiday season.

Ms Joanie

Registration

This year our registration went very well. Presently our AM sessions including "Toddler Separation, Nursery and Pre K" are all full. We have started filling our PM sessions. If you know anyone that is looking for a quality preschool experience, please tell them about our school.

Summer Fun Registration

Registration for Summer has begun. If you are interested in Ms Sara's exciting program please contact her ASAP. I am sure that classes will fill up quickly.

Mardi Gras Family Fun Day

The fundraising committee will be hosting a "Mardi Gras" family fun day on February 28, 2009. The cost of the event will be $5.00 per child or $10.00 per family. Danielle Tesler will be sending out more details.

Annual Dinner Fundraiser
(Ladies only)

The Bethpage Nursery School annual fundraiser will be held on March 5, 2009 at H.R. Singletons. The fundraising committee will be hosting this event. The night promises to be filled with great prizes, delicious food and entertainment. The fundraising committee has been steadfast at securing donations for this popular night out. Several families have been making baskets and donations for prizes. If you have any questions or would like to make a donation or a basket of your own, please contact Danielle Tesler or Lisa Chappell (Pre K).

Kindergarten Readiness

Our group of almost kindergartners started their class on January 6, 2009. They are having a lot of fun and are doing really well. Ms Tobi and I look forward to our "Tuesdays with the 4s."

Welcome to BNS

We are so happy that the following children have joined our wonderful school:

The Two Of Us
James Downes and his Mommy
Lucas Ferri and his Mommy
Logan Fick and his Mommy
Lauren Kachodaurian and her Mommy
Matthew Schneider and his Mommy
Ryan Tesler and his Mommy
Marissa Vaccarelli and her Mommy

Toddler Separation
Daniela Como
Nico Schappert

Nursery
Tessa Read

Tuition Update

As of February 1, 2009 families with multiple children in our school will receive a 20% discount on the lower of the 2 tuitions. Please feel free to call me with any questions and concerns.

Computers

I am trying to get computers into our classrooms so that we can provide our students with valuable technology lessons. We were hoping to be included in Cablevision's "Power to Learn" program. However we have learned that we must be K-12 to qualify. If anyone has a computer that they are willing to donate we would greatly appreciate it. I will be developing a curriculum plan for technology once I have some computers.

Eagle Scouts

The Eagle Scouts will be doing work on our lower level classroom. If anyone is interested in the plans please contact Tracie Schappert. I think that everyone will be pleased with the projected plans.

Director's Sessions

As of right now I am contracted to work 7 sessions biweekly (21 hours over 2 weeks). I have scheduled myself to be in Monday 9-12, Tuesday 8:00-11:00 (every other week from home), Wednesday 9-12 and Thursday 9-12. My contract stipulates that I am to be in the building 3 sessions per week. My 4th session is to be used outside of school for meetings, computer/paperwork, phone calls and curriculum/office supply shopping. On some occasions I have had several meetings in one week. I have made up that time by coming in a fifteen minutes later or leaving earlier.

I have asked the board for one more session to be added to my existing contract. I feel that it is necessary to be in the building one more day per week. I hope that they will grant me this session.

If anyone needs to speak with me or set up an appointment please feel free to call me, send an email or slip a note in my mailbox. I would love the opportunity to meet with any or all of you!

Lunar New Year

To all of my friends that celebrate Chinese New Year my family and I wish you Happiness, Health, Prosperity and much Luck! May the year of the ox be wonderful for you and your loved ones.

The February Edition will be chock full of news and happenings!

December Edition

Dear Families,

It is hard to believe that we are in the Holiday Season. I am contracted to work 7 sessions biweekly. This means that over the course of a two week period I will work 21 hours. Built into those sessions are hours outside of the normal school day for Board meetings, Executive Board meetings, Co-op Director's meetings and paper/computer work from home.
Some weeks there are more meetings or holidays that effect my hours. I will adjust my schedule accordingly. For example, this week I will be in Monday-Wednesday.Also, the week of 12/1 I have an executive board meeting and a Co-Op Director's meeting which means I will be out of the building during school hours that week.
I hope this clarifies my schedule for all of you. If you have any questions please do not hesitate to call 516-931-0811 or email me at joanie@bethpagenurseryschool.org .

Fundraising
Bake Sale

The Fundraising Committee will be hosting a Thanksgiving bake sale on Tuesday 11/25 and Wednesday 11/26 at school from 11:00 AM to 1:00PM. Over the past two plus months I have witnessed, first hand, the fantastic spirit of parent participation at Bethpage Nursery School. Committee chairs and their committees are constantly amazing me with their time and talents. The willingness and great energy to take care of our children, staff and building has been wonderful. The faculty and I are grateful to all of you. Your efforts are a big part of why we LOVE our jobs at Bethpage Cooperative Nursery School.
So the next time you are called upon by the Board, your committee, a teacher or me remember:

Participating Parents don't get paid, not because they are worthless, but because they are priceless!"

Warm Regards,
Ms. Joanie

Welcome!

I am very excited to announce that we opened our doors this month for:

Ms. Anna D'Agostino and her Terrific "Two of Us" class

A warm BNS welcome to:

Kevin Bury and his Mommy Jean
Kyle Gallego and his Mommy Joanne
Sophia Maciel and her Mommy Sandra
Haley Flaherty and her Daddy John

We have room for 4 more little ones between 18months and 2 1/2 years old and their favorite adult.

General Membership Meeting

Our membership meeting was held on October 7, 2008 at 8PM. Thank you to all who were able to join us. I hope that you enjoyed Dr. Shelton's presentation on "Parenting Stress: Surviving the Early Childhood Years" as much as the faculty and I did. After the meeting I spoke with many people who felt "invigorated" by Dr. Shelton's workshop.
We hope to have Dr. Shelton return during the school year. For those of you who were unable to attend, I left copies of Dr. Shelton's handout in your child's mailbox.

Parking

I appreciate the consideration that has been extended to our Lexington Avenue neighbors during arrival and dismissal. The neighbors have expressed their gratitude.
Reminder: All faculty members are to park on the driveway, in front of the school or on Nibbe.
